The Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost

“What is it you want me to do for you?” — Jesus

This is the question that Jesus asked James and John in our text for this Sunday after their request for him to do for them whatever they wished. What a question! What an offer?! Can you imagine what you might ask if this were a question directed to you? How would you respond? For what or whom would you make your request?

There is something revealing in seeking to answer this question honestly. Questions have the ability to do that—to expose us—to open us up to what we really think and desire. I believe that is what this question is designed to do as well. As we prepare for this Sunday, I would just ask each of you to take some time to sit with this question as though it were being asked of you. How would you respond? What do you truly desire from Jesus if this opportunity presented itself to you?

May we all see something of the truth as we contemplate this important question. See you on Sunday!
