The Third Sunday in Lent
“Let us put forth Moses as our example for life in our treatise. First we shall go through in outline his life as we have learned it from the divine scriptures. Then we shall seek out the spiritual understanding which corresponds to the history in order to obtain suggestions of virtue. Through such understanding we may come to know the perfect life for men.” — From “The Life of Moses” by Gregory of Nyssa (335-394)
The first Sunday in Lent, we considered our ancestor the wandering Aramean and how this pointed to our great Ancestor the Christ. Last Sunday, we considered Abram’s journey as our journey. This Sunday, I would like to remain in the old testament and consider the text in Exodus 3.
In the spirit of Gregory of Nyssa quoted above, I would like to look at the details of this episode in the life of Moses as a way to view life lived consciously in and responsive to the Presence. This is after all what the season of Lent is all about, the invitation to connect again with the central Christian insight, that God has come to share his life with all humanity!
I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday!
